Today is National Day on Writing! This year's theme encourages writing about your community, and we are excited to share more with you about the history of Measurement Incorporated and the growing role of our company and its leaders in the local community.
MI was founded in 1980 by Dr. Henry Scherich. From Dr. Scherich's basement to rental properties, the company moved into the BC Remedy Building in 1984. Thus began Dr. Scherich's work of renovating the surrounding historic buildings and turning them into viable office space for his growing company. Before it housed Measurement Incorporated, the BC Remedy Building was the manufacturing facility for BC Powder. MI recognized these roots by dubbing the administrative conference area as the Headache Room.
MI eventually expanded, adding the Brodie Duke Warehouse and the Imperial Tobacco Company Building to its list of office complexes. Here's a fun fact about the Imperial Building - scenes from the movie Bull Durham were filmed here!
Dr. Scherich's attention to detail extends beyond the buildings that house the company. He is known throughout the local area for his community service and revitalization efforts, and he has incorporated this civic-mindedness into MI's company culture. MI and its employees are active in several programs and organizations throughout Durham. During the holidays, employees "adopt" children and families to purchase presents and necessities for those who are less fortunate. Every quarter, employees visit Urban Ministries to prepare and serve dinner. Blood drives, food bank donations, and clothing collections are just a few of the ways that community service is recognized as a part of the company's culture.
MI also takes the time to have fun! This spring, employees enjoyed a field day, complete with relay races, games, and dancing. Food trucks visit the offices every week to give employees a variety of different lunch options from local businesses. An annual holiday party is the perfect way to close out every year.
This civic-mindedness and dedication to company morale has led to community and industry recognition. MI has been ranked as one of the top 100 private companies in the state of North Carolina and has been named as one of the Triangle's fastest-growing companies for several years. The company and Dr. Scherich have been recognized throughout its tenure by the Chamber of Commerce, preservation groups, and business journals for its philanthropic and industry performance.
The PEG Writing team is proud to be a part of a company that values its employees and surrounding community. Now, in celebration of National Day on Writing, we would like to hear about your community. Tell us. What makes it unique? What do you like about it? Why should someone come and visit?
We look forward to your writing!
