Exploring the role of online writing programs…
PEG Writing™ Selected for Classroom Trials Study
DURHAM, NC (June 10, 2013) - PEG Writing, the online writing instruction, practice, and formative assessment system developed by Measurement Incorporated, has been selected to participate in an independent study examining the role that software might play in the “real world” of classroom writing instruction. In selecting PEG Writing, judges for the working group conducting the research praised the web-based program’s “great user interface,” “flexible, cutting-edge capabilities,” and “clear focus on the ELA Common Core State Standards.”
“We’re delighted to have been selected for this important and unique study,” said Dr. Henry Scherich, President of Measurement Incorporated. “With the Common Core State Standards fueling requirements for more writing across the curriculum, there’s no question that students will need every opportunity to develop their skills. The increasing volume of student writing, however, will place even greater demands on teachers to evaluate the work in a timely manner. We believe that PEG Writing can help both students and teachers meet these new challenges. Having a research-based independent analysis of the potential will be invaluable.”
The Classroom Trials Study, designed by an education industry working group under the direction of The Common Pool, a leading research consultancy, will examine the degree to which software programs like PEG Writing can:
- Increase the quality and quantity of writing by students;
- Support teachers to meet identified performance goals for writing instruction;
- Match the needs of students and teachers within the constraints of typical school environments,
Funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the study will commence in the spring of 2014 in selected schools throughout the country.
